Letters to the editor: And the truth shall set you free

I would like to recognize Derek Bonnell and Father Gardner for well-articulated letters regarding so-called same sex marriage. Often Father Gardner will write in defending the faith and usually what follows is an angry letter from someone who opposes the Church’s moral teaching.  These arguments are rarely well articulated and usually end in name calling such as “hateful.”  Sandy Slusarek’s response is a typical example.
The idea of Relativism has been wholeheartedly embraced by our culture. Relativism essentially states: “your version of the Truth is true for you and my version of the truth is true for me even if they directly oppose one another; they are both still valid.” This idea is forming the thoughts of our culture and now our laws.  This is evident in the push for same sex marriage which rejects thousands of years of human history and the Bible.
What happened to the Defense of Marriage Act, that marriage would be a union of one man and one woman?  Now our current officials are ignoring this law and human history regarding marriage. The basic building block of any society is the family and as it is continually undermined we should expect our society to suffer and eventually collapse.
The idea that it is hateful to call something morally wrong is a pitiful statement.  The Bible clearly describes love in 1 st Corinthians : “love does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth.”  Jesus also states that “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through the Son.”  The idea that you can reject basic moral principles described in the New and Old Testament is to reject Jesus, who is himself Truth.  Sadly many Christian denominations reject this truth by supporting so called same sex marriage and the brutal and violent destruction of human life through abortion. To claim to be followers of Christ and to support such ideas is a glaring contradiction that can only be justified through the philosophy of Relativism.
I encourage those who speak the truth out of love to continue to do so while it is still legal. It is already illegal in Canada to speak out against same sex marriage. In our culture that embraces so many dark philosophies it should be no surprise this same culture rejects the Light which is Truth.

Ron, you mean my unverifiable fact that the New Testament Canon was codified in the year 397 at the Counsel of Carthage with your actual history that this happened in the middle ages with the KJV bible translation? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Kepha, good luck living in your fantasy land and, since we are a free country, you may continue to believe and quote whatever you wish to support your point of view. Since I see very little in verifiable facts coming from you I am giving up trying to debate your interpretation of the bible with actual history.

Ron, How many 'truths' can there be? There can be a multitude of beliefs but only one truth...unless there is no truth at all.

You misquote me. I said that opposition to homosexual behavior is a mainstay, not that homosexual behavior is only recently begun. It is the view that homosexual relations are not natural that is the mainstay.

One has a difficult time debating a person who misquotes and sets up strawmen to knock down with unsubstantiated claims and incorrect dates.

Jared, It is certainly vague but the use of 'Creator' denotes a source outside of man from which our rights are given. And the word is not exactly cryptic. We receive a natural order of things which is 'written on the heart of every man' and so are custodians of that order.

I wish the federal government would remove itself from many areas of domestic life but I understand its interest in marriage. The traditional family is the building block of any society and so government supports and even subsidizes the family. I am sorry to be blunt same sex couples do not possess the potential to be this building block without extraordinary help. Marriage is not merely a contract of companionship and sexual gratification. And before you say that I would prevent seniors or the sterile from marrying let me say the natural order of those unions is nothing compared to the slippery slope you concede is possible.

Jared, You will have a very difficult time debating with a person who interprets their religious views as the only "truth" and credits it for our legal system. Kepha obviously is not an indepth student of real history but mixes it with his/her beliefs. We are a free country and, as has been said many times, we are also free to believe anything we wish no matter how unfactual it is, such as Kepha's statement that not engaging in homosexual relations is a "mainstay". Homosexual relations have been a fact since recorded history began, and before that.
Kepha, you keep your "moral code" and I will keep mine, which does not push my beliefs on homosexuals, or anyone else.
