2/16/2013 6:59:00 AM Letters to the editor: Priest advised to stop judging people, start accepting

In response to the Open Forum on Feb 9, written by Fr. Gardner, I feel there are a few things that need to be addressed. First of all, the whole letter was filled with so much anger and hate. I was taught that clergy are supposed to be representatives of Christ on earth. I can’t imagine God ever being that negative and judgmental about any of his children. Fr. Gardner spoke of homosexuals in same sex marriages as being “morally repulsive.” No, what’s morally repulsive are people who shoot and kill innocent children at their grade school. The men who rape and mutilate women and young girls in the Republic of the Congo, is morally repulsive. And let us not forget the men who sexually exploit young boys. I think we can all agree that act certainly falls under the category of being morally repulsive. He also stated that “we need babies.” There are over 153 million orphans worldwide. Please Fr. Gardner, stop being judge and jury. There is enough hatred in the world. Leave the homosexual people alone and let them live their lives as they choose. Why should they be denied the right to have children to love? The God that I know is good, loving, caring and compassionate.... The world would be a much happier place with less judging and more acceptance of others. Sandy Slusarek, Grand Rapids, Mich. Formerly of La Salle-Peru

Bravo Sandy, well said. I don't always agree with Metalworker but in this case his comments are spot on.

It may well be true He said those thingd. So it is written and as an act of faith so must we believe. However, so many things I have been told trough the years were pure false hoods told to keep uninformed young people in line. How little we know of a God Man who at one time were followed by a large number of the then known world. What, maybe three or four years of a supposed 33 year life span, and most of those things put down in written word almost fifty years after His death. Some by people who did not know him. And then one must take in the untold death and suffering imposed on untold numbers in His name. Yes, He said many things and u choose to follow only those teachings that suit u. You may grudeingly admit other teachings but set them aside as unimportant. Personally, I choose to believe that Gods love is for all his creatures and He died for all of them and will welcome all who live a life of Love wether or not they know Him or in fact call Him by some other name . I believe thaat He made people perfect in His eyes and notonly those u deem to be. We can argue until the end days and then He will let us know if loving or shunting was the way to go.

MW, I have not forgotten about the corporal works of mercy but we must remember the spiritual works of mercy as well. In many ways, they are the more difficult ones to live out.
Jesus is, of course, a loving and forgiving God. But He usually added something to His words of pardon, "Go and sin no more."
Regarding Jesus condemning people or their actions please not the following... Mt 26:24 Jesus speaks about the one who will betray him Mt: 18:6 Jesus speaks about those that lead His followers to sin Mt 23 Jesus calls the Pharisees hypocrites, foolish, blind, serpents, vipers, and says 'woe to (them) seven times Jesus teaches about Hell throughout the gospels

Ron, Your argument is used often, as if Jesus condemned directly everything that He wished His people to avoid. As I said, He did not directly condemn rape...so it is okay? Jesus is mute on identity theft so gather your friends' social security numbers and go shopping. Nothing specific about beating your spouse or kids so...
Your line about being the next pope is also unoriginal and a bit funny....following the teachings of Christ as upheld and articulated by the Pope makes me a mind reading candidate for the papacy.

It is amazing the number of things attributed to Christ. He said this and He said that when in fact He did no such thing. Christ did in fact say to a crowd who were inthe process of stoning a women who was said to have commited adultry, let those without sin cast the first stone. Or so it is written. In my reading ot the scripture, and it is scant at best, I remember a teaching of Love and foregiveness. I read about about a gental man who is said to have said feed the hungry, cloth the naked take care of the poor, give from tour needs and not your excess.. Member, all the things u seem to have forgotten. I do not remenber reading where Christ comdemend anyone, rather He forgsve them. Do u,Kepha , think you could put a child in a loving same sex relationship or would u rather place a child in a really bad hetro relasionship or condem that child to a life on the street? What would Christ do?
