St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator is closing its maternity unit, effective Thursday.
On June 10, St. Mary’s Hospital announced its intent to close its Maternity Unit. On Wednesday, St. Mary’s Hospital announced that “it would close its maternity unit sooner than expected and will no longer accept patients as of July 3, 2014.”
“The decision to no longer offer maternity services is based primarily on limited access to physicians who deliver babies in the region,” said John Flanders, president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Hospital.
“We believe it is in the best interest of our patients to have their babies delivered at nearby hospitals where there is physician coverage,” Flanderscontinued. “St. Mary’s Hospital is coordinating with EMS providers and area hospitals, including OSF facilities in Ottawa and Pontiac, to ensure expectant mothers in Streator have seamless access to care.”
Patients who have questions about their maternity care with St. Mary’s Hospital should contact John Flanders at (815) 673-4500.
