7/10/2013 9:32:00 AM Letters to the editor: Bring back IVCC football and nickname Apaches
Congratulations to sports editor Kevin Chlum and his column concerning athletics at IVCC on Tuesday, July 2. (See Related Stories below.) Kevin hits the proverbial nail right on the head. IVCC needs to do one of two things: Make a full commitment to its athletic programs or chop them all together. Coaches and athletes need to have the backing of a school’s administration. They work hard and make too many sacrifices representing their school to deserve anything else. Many people in the area can remember back when IVCC had football. The beginning of the end for athletics at IVCC began when they dropped football. The short-sightedness of past administrations and the political correctness of past administrations is coming back to roost. How many people in the area still refer to IVCC as the Apaches before political correctness forced a name change to the Eagles? Regarding building community support for IVCC, they had it and misused it. Back in the ‘70s, and ‘80s, it was a sign to behold when everyone supported their different high school teams on Friday nights but come Saturday night everyone from Mendota to St. Bede to La Salle-Peru to Ottawa, Princeton and all points in between were in Howard Fellows Stadium pulling together as one for the IVCC Apaches. Visiting teams and coaches often commented on how they hated to come to IVCC and play in such as environment with 5,000 Illinois Valley residents 100 percent behind the Apaches. Maybe that’s what needs to happen at IVCC. Let’s have a rebirth of that great community spirit. Bring back football and drop the Eagles and bring become the Apaches once more.
