Letters to the editor: Oglesby man a hero for saving baby eagles

How disappointing it was to read Tom Collins’ article on the rescue of two young eagles in Peru.

The first error was in the title of the article. The fact is the birds were not in the nest. They were on the ground, having been blown out of their nest by an earlier storm. The article failed to mention the birds were unable to fly. At approximately eight weeks old, they were weeks, maybe a month or more, away from flying.

With predators and weather, unable to fly, they were almost certainly doomed. One had a broken wing; he never could have survived.

After my brother’s (I think heroic) actions, both birds live today as a direct result.

Although Tom Collins’ article title was eye catching, it was very misleading. A better title would have been: Local naturalist saves baby eagles from certain doom.

As witnessed by his beautiful photographs of eagles on his Flickr account, my brother’s love of eagles and nature in general is abundant and selfless.

I’m proud to say he is my brother and I think he deserves a medal.

Doesn't anyone care that this guy has been to trouble before for messing with wildlife? Wasn't he told to leave the eagles alone?

In light of these facts, I agree with you Dennis.

Please explain what happened to the NEST ?? That nest was built like Fort Knox ! Somebody had to knock down that nest . DNR probably did out concern for eagles safety in the future. Every day I drove north to Peru there was more and more people stopping to look . I became more and more concerned for the safety of the whole family of eagles . Can't people just observe from a safe distance ?? Something as beautiful as a family of eagles is now gone! I was very happy to see them as I drove north to Peru everyday! It only takes one person to ruin something beautiful for everybody else. Thanks alot Mr. Patterson !
