12/10/2012 10:49:00 AM Open Forum: Get serious about getting state budget under control
The Democrats will never quit spending and we Illinois taxpayers will be taxed to death. Former state legislator Mike Smith of Canton was officially appointed to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. He will be collecting a salary of almost $94,000 for this job. It falls short of full-time work. The board meets once a month, for less than a couple of hours, often without its members even bothering to make the drive, instead listening in and voting — unanimously, most of the time over the phone. Mr. Smith is a former state rep and is in line now to receive two state pensions. By his own admission, Smith does not meet the written requirements for the job, which include “a minimum of five years of direct experience in labor and employment relations.” Illinois has more than 300 of these state boards and commissions, about 10 percent of which pay and often too much. State Sen. David Koehler of Peoria sponsored Smith’s appointment to this board. Mr. Koehler should put his energy to work by getting rid of some of these boards and commissions and showing us that he and other Democrats are serious about getting the state’s bad budget situation under control. Elaine Yanos: I completely agree with you. Our state is lower the whale sh>> and thats at the bottom of the ocean. Governor Quinn is really a mess> Maybe some day things will change in our state. Our unfunded pensions is also a big joke. Our state officials are worse that the ones we have in washington. You tell me all politicians are crooked.
