Letters to the editor: Seems like hazing at girls softball game

I am a grandparent in the local area who attended a fifth and sixth grade girl’s softball game recently.

I must tell people how appalled her grandfather, me and other parents were, when at the end of the game, the winning team comes to the losing teams dugout, the winning team then holds hands across from each other and makes the losing team girls crawl on their knees through the rocks to get back in their dugout, while the other team is yelling at them.

This seems so degrading, almost a form of hazing, and should be done away with immediately. What is wrong with the adults in charge of these girls!  Do they really think that this is appropriate?

We hear so much about bullying, what would you call this?  This is a form of punishment that needs to be stopped immediately.

This is very unsportsmanlike.

The coaches might think these shenanagins are funny but they, the coaches, should stop it right now. This only leads to bigger and more nasty problems in the future. The winning teams should win graciously and show good sportsmanship.

As a parent and a coach I am wondering why you would refer to this tradition as hazing?

You must not have heard the chanting of we are proud of you. I have coached and watched many young girls in the game and they are not yelling in a negative manner but a positive manner.

Get real!
