5/12/2014 9:38:00 AM Letters to the editor: L-P band continues tradition of greatness
Thursday evening, May 1, 2014, at the beautiful Mattheisssen Memorial Auditorium, I had the wonderful privilege of listening to the Spring Concert performed by the La Salle-Peru Township High School jazz band, percussion ensemble and symphonic band.
As an alumnus from many years ago, I was extremely pleased to see that the conductor, Kyle Adelmann, has the program pointing in a very positive direction.
Not only did the band perform admirably, but attendees had the opportunity to listen to and interact with Sherry Rubins, daughter of James Brown (former percussion instructor) who is now a professor in percussion at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I remember seeing Sherry as a very young girl who grew up under the tutelage of her father and our former band diretor, Chris Izzo, and she has become a phenomenal percussionist who now performs with the San Antonio Symphony.
It was wonderful to see a program on the ascendancy, with numbers that now will require the symphonic band to create a secondary band program as well. Sitting in the auditorium brought back many memories of the L-P bands of years ago under Christ Izzo and Mel Pontious.
With the L-P Chorus just returning from their successful New York City tour, the fine arts are alive and flourishing in the Illinois Valley, and that is a very good thing for all of us. Contratulations to Mr. Adelmann for what he has accomplished, and I encourage everyone to attend their concerts and take great pride in their accomplishments.
Gary L. Gearhart, L-P Class of 1965
