3/12/2014 1:03:00 AM Letters to the editor: Peru referendum opposition attacks and organizer responds
In a recent letter to the editor Mr. Gerry Stachowiak attempted to create the impression he had some inside information that would surely discredit the organizers of the Peru At-Large Initiative. I have never met Mr. Stachowiak and I am quite certain that he had no idea that the misleading statements included in his letter would be so promptly exposed as “all politics”. Mr. Stachowiak took it upon himself to inform the readers that he knew things about me, my family and my life. Needless to say, after reading Mr. Stachowiak’s version of my biography I contacted the NewsTribune editors and encouraged them to allow me equal time to correct Mr. Stachowiak’s version of who Travis Nelson is. So Gerry, point by point from your letter here is who I am. I ran for Peru township office on a platform of donating 50 percent of the $40,000 salary to local charities which I had already contacted prior to the election. If I had won, that would have happened. I grew up in Newark, Ill., and lived in Oglesby with my grandmother who opened and owned Garzanelli’s. While attending IVCC for two years where I realized I would someday return to this area to raise my family. I came back to the Illinois Valley and Peru with my wife and three girls almost four years ago. We did not “just move to town” as was suggested by Mr. Stachowiak. We have been renting while searching for a house in Peru. Good news Gerry, you will be thrilled to know we recently found a house in Peru and we are all very excited to move. Since you really know so little about me Gerry, I want to let you know that I teach CCD at my church and I coach Peru Girls Softball. We have been welcomed by our new friends and neighbors, many of whom are referendum supporters. I am not a reformer as you suggest. I’m just a citizen who wants to get involved and help improve my city and I am convinced the At-Large Referendum is a good start. Be advised Gerry, Peru is as much my city now as it is yours.
Travis Nelson, Peru
