Letters to the editor: Utica mayor disrespects sand mine hearing

This is in regards to the proposed sand mine located in Waltham Township north of Interstate 80 at Utica.

At the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development luncheon last Thursday Utica Mayor Gloria Alvarado stated “I helped to negotiate what I believe to be a good agreement for the village and the sand company. I’m hoping the board will see it that way.” She also stated that the mine would be a “wonderful addition” to Utica and that “I have my fingers crossed for that one.”

The Utica public hearing on the mine is not complete and the next hearing is Jan. 28 at 6 p/m. At the next hearing more expert witnesses are to testify and closing arguments are to be heard.

Mayor Alvarado has now attempted to influence the Utica boards vote by making her statements to the media. She has shown a complete disrespect for the hearing and everyone that has testified and will testify. She has now cast her vote in public before the conclusion. This is equal to a head juror at a trial stating they believe the defendant is guilty/innocent while the trial is in process. In this case the juror would be removed and a mistrial would be granted.

Residents of Utica should be embarrassed and outraged that their mayor has not waited until the conclusion of the hearing to cast her vote if it becomes necessary. This is an attempt by the mayor to affect the outcome before due process of the hearing in complete.

Waltham Township, Utica
