Letters to the editor: Jobseekers deserve respect

Being unemployed and looking for work is one of the most difficult and frustrating things I have ever had to do in my life, especially after working the same job in a call center for the last 15 years. Being an older American, job options for me are limited, as I can’t lift 50 pounds or stand on my feet for eight hours a day. I could go on and tell you all the things I am qualified to do, but that’s not the purpose of my letter.
How often have you taken the time to fill out an online application or emailed/mailed your cover letter, resume and references in response to a prospective job, only to get no response? That number for me is way too many.
It is a requirement to look for work in order to receive unemployment benefits. I keep track of the jobs I have applied for by filling out a work search record. After waiting an appropriate amount of time, I usually end up writing “no response” in the results column.
As respective businesses, one would think they should have the common courtesy to at least acknowledge your interest in the position they are hiring for. Even if they don’t want to hire you, is it that difficult to pick up the phone or even send a simple automated email response — apparently so, since I usually hear nothing.
As I continue my search for work, I sincerely thank the few who have responded to my inquiries. As for those who did not, I will be more respectful to you than you were to me and thank you for your lack of consideration!

Thank you, Kathy, for your letter as to the uncaring manner of local companies. Please lest them, so the consumers may know who really cares for people.
A suggestion that worked in the past, was to follow up with the contact on a weekly basis to show your continued interest in the position or company.
Also networking is an accompanying effort to hear about positions before they are advertised.
The sports guys and politicians seem to have this networking thing down, with many jobs going to friends and relatives. Keep your presence in front of them!

Well said, Kathy. My husband has been unemployed and seeking work for an entire year. He has been running into the same kind of treatment. Thanks for your letter.

I could have written Kathy's letter. You take so much time to submit resumes, applications, follow-up letters, without so much as a peep of a response, even to say thank you but no thank you. I also would like to add, that even though some of us more "experienced" workers may not be able to lift 59 lbs we also will not be taking maternity leave, nor need time off to care for sick children, etc. Employers need to keeping an open mind.
