Letters to the editor: What's the noble thing to do?

In Acts 17:11, Luke commended the Bereans as “noble,” because they compared the teachings of Paul and Silas with the Scriptures, before accepting them as truth. The opposite of this (un-noble) would be to hear the Word preached without examination, trusting explicitly in the preacher.
1Thess 5:21 says, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” Christ said in John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; and they are they which testify of me.” 2Tim 2:15,16 says, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” It’s our responsibility to “study” and “prove”. Church leaders are to “guide” us, but not to do our thinking. When asked, “What do you believe?” the answer shouldn’t be, “I’ll ask my pastor…” Or “my Church teaches…” The question was, “what do you believe?” We are saved by faith in Christ (His Word), not in our pastor or church. The Bible doesn’t teach that pastors are interpreters of truth, for the Bible interprets itself, as scripture is compared with scripture (Isa 28:9,10, 2Peter 1:20,21-2:2). A good pastor will teach and encourage his flock to feed themselves (study), as a parent teaches his child to feed, think and speak for himself - promoting growth (2Peter 3:18). How alarming would it be to see a mother still spoon feeding her 40 year old child? Yet, long standing Christians are content to be spoon fed their spiritual food by their leaders.
There are scores of Christians who are very adamant in opposing others’ beliefs when they themselves have never investigated their own — this is neither noble nor reasonable. Many are simply riding someone else’s shirttail, which is a dangerous practice. It’s important that we formulate correct theology for ourselves rather than casually following popular opinion, for our doctrinal beliefs directly affect our thoughts, actions, concepts of God, etc, and thus our eternal destiny. If we’re not Bible students, then how could we ever be sure we’re in the right church, hearing the right message?
Jesus Christ was rejected because the Jewish theologians had taught false ideas concerning the Messiah, and un-noble majorities trusted this theology without question, therefore closing their minds to the truth of Christ’s teaching. If Christ had taught the people to explicitly trust their leaders as “interpreters” of truth, the Christian church would’ve never been born!
