Why should you buy a poppy?
On May 3 and 4 the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW post 4079 will be selling poppies in various places in Mendota.
Buddy Poppies are made by veterans who are in veteran’s hospitals and veterans homes. The Ladies Auxiliary purchases and then sells or asks for donations. All monies collected are then put into the relief fund for veterans in need.
Last year the ladies spent many hours sewing and buying many supplies. They make scuffies, lap-robes, utility bags, wheelchair seat covers, bed throws and stationary kits (paper, envelopes and stamps), plus purchasing phone cards and personal grooming items.
They send these boxes of supplies to four Illinois veteran’s homes: Anna, Mantino, Quincy and La Salle and also to various hospitals and medical centers throughout the area. This includes Danville VA Medical Center, Ed Hines VA Hospital, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, North Chicago VA Medical Center, Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, John Cochran VA Medical in St. Louis, Madison VA Medical Center in Madison, Wis., and Iowa City VA Medical Center.
So you see, when you buy a Buddy Poppy this year, maybe you will be willing to give a little more for these veterans.
The Ladies Auxiliary should be commended for all the hard work and time they devote to our veterans’ welfare.
