Letters to the Editor: Illinois Senate urged to reject same sex 'marriage'

Recently the News Tribune reported that the proponents of same-sex “marriage” plan to use Valentine’s Day in order to pass their disastrous legislation in the Illinois Senate.
As the pastor of St. Valentine Church in Peru, I strongly object to the use of our holy patron, the martyr St. Valentine, to advance such an obscene and insidious piece of legislation.
Marriage is for procreation. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal (Feb. 2) noted that for the first time, last year, more adult diapers than diapers for babies were purchased by the Japanese. And the U.S. is not far behind Japan in approaching the demographic cliff. We need babies!
It has been observed that homosexualism is an illicit luxury for the rich; and oppressive to the poor. This is so because lower fertility rates raise the cost of having children. While the poor are increasingly financially burdened in the effort to raise children, some people who are enchanted by the pleasures of materialism contrive to prolong their own prosperity at the expense of others. Thus, the intimate acts of the promiscuous are often deliberately rendered sterile and homosexualists must resort to expensive and illicit technologies in order to produce children, rather than receiving them as the fruit and gift of natural sexual relations.
Homosexual activity is also medically a high-risk lifestyle, the cost of which is passed on to the general public which is already straining under skyrocketing medical costs and the possible rationing of health-care services. In many ways, homosexualism is contrary to nature, harmful to the common good, and morally repulsive.
The Catholic Church venerates martyrs, like the legendary St. Valentine, who would rather accept death in giving witness to true love than bow to the prevailing hedonistic culture. Indeed, there are aspects of human nature which do not change: such as the goodness of natural marriage, the dignity of true femininity and masculinity, and the ugliness of obscenity.
Thankfully, the Catholic Church led by the Successor of St. Peter will continue to preach the truth in season and out of season, when it’s fashionable and when it’s not fashionable, until the ship of faithful believers is safely led to the harbor of eternal life.
I respectfully urge God-fearing Illinoisans to roundly reject so-called same sex “marriage,” and to urge your state senator to oppose this disastrous legislation.

The Rev. William M. Gardner,
 St. Valentine Church and
St. Mary Church, Peru
