1/14/2013 9:51:00 AM Letters to the editor: There's no escaping the heavy hand of taxes
The Pilgrims left their homeland to get away from taxes. Where are we supposed to go? We have inheritance tax after you die, your children (heirs) are taxed at 55 percent. Most have to sell whatever they inherit to pay the tax. Dusty Rogers (Roy Rogers’ son) had to sell everything, including the mounted Trigger, Bullett, the museum, everything. That is wrong because it was already taxed when the family bought it. We have that tax, real estate tax, state tax, utility tax, gas tax and many more. The Constitution of the United States says “There shall be no tax other than income.” Seniors who own their homes, businesses, farms, have to pay tax, after paying all their lives and many of them are having to sell their homes for taxes. And if they don’t sell, when they die, the heirs have to pay 55 percent on what they inherit. Wrong! Some of the people are in their 80s and are losing their homes because Social Security isn’t nearly enough to pay real estate tax. Sandy Skowronski, Peru

Sandy, what school did you go to? Mine taught me that the Pilgrims came here for religious freedom, not taxes. P.S., the only people who pay inheritance taxes are those worth millions and 98% of us do not have estates that qualify for inheritance taxes. My mother died, we sold her house and divided it according to her will, and ZERO taxes were owed. We also try to lessen taxes on elderly retired with tax "freezes", etc.

Things have changed nd if your heirs will have to sell everything to pay an estate tax, well then you surely can afford to pay your realestate taxes. We all want police protection, fire protection, teachers and schools, a place to park our children and be sure they are protected and schooled in the basics. We want street lights and garbage pickup and such. How about an army to keep the bad guys away, someone to bleed and perhaps die so we can play Bingo and sleep at night. It would be nice if all of those things were free for the taking. It makes me wonder sometimes when I hear or read the complaints of some just what they have done to contribute to our country. In the words of JFK. ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. It's a great country and a fine place to live. Oh, if perchance you have given of youself, why then, Thank You
