Open Forum: Thank you, veterans

Last week I took my father-in-law to vote. He is in is 90s and can't see well these days so it took a few minutes for him to complete his ballot.
He was a bomber pilot in World War II.  His generation was called the “Greatest Generation” and in many ways it was.  Here he was, this old man, going to vote.
Veterans Day is Sunday and I thought about the symmetry of Election Day and Veterans Day being so close together.
It was his sacrifice and the sacrifices of every other veteran since the birth of this great nation that make it possible for all of us to exercise our greatest right— the right to choose our elected officials.
If you happen to be in HyVee or Applebees or any of the other places who are going to honor our vets with a meal, and you see one of these old men, walk up to him and shake his hand and thank him from the bottom of your heart that sacrifices of veterans like him make Election Days possible.

Good Morning Metalworker, If you read your first sentence that you posted in your original article that is not true. Then you state in your next sentence that the price for the meal is a uniform or a militaryID that also is not true. They except several kinds of IDs I never once mentioned anything about the menu or items on it. As far as a DD form 214 I have a copy in my file cabinet. I don't think any vet is asking for a pat on the back. My opinion is your facts are wrong. the way you stated them in your first letter.
I also did not get a meal but I am sure their were many who did. Thats the way I see it. Are you ashamed to sign your real name I am not. Thanks and have a good day.

Those are the facts. Applebee's had a special menu with seven items and Olive Garden had a spec. menu with five items, very little choice.
That is fine but they both made money on this day as most vets have family's and would not go to eat alone.
Soooooooooo! a two dollar lb. of spaggts. is not a treat.
Not when the Tea party wants to cut Tri care for vets. Not much of a trade off, I think.
If you went and had a good time, why that's id great please don't say I have the facts wrong.
I too have a separation form issued back in 62 and would not go to the bank to remove it from a lock box for a plate of pasta.
That is me and I speak for me.

Dear Metalworker, I was appalled at the article you wrote about our vets getting a free meal. You certainly did not look at what kinds of IDS most of the eating placing will except.
I went online and counted at least eight ids that Applebee's will except. I am sure not very many vets would be able to get into their uniform. However I am a vet and proud to have served my Country. Most vets still have their DD form 214, I still have mine and it is a notarized copy and I got discharged from the military 43 years ago. The next time you decided to write a article I would say you should get your facts straight.

No one is going to honor our vets with a meal or anything else.
Does your father still have his uniform, military ID?
I thought not, and those are the tickets for that meal from a separate menu.
This gent is satisfied with his contribution to his country and does not need a pat on the back or a free meal to make him feel good while his health care and the bennies he earned for that service are going south with the Tea Party members.
Just do the right thing. Give him and others who served what they earned and stop calling them people who want stuff.
