Letters to the editor: It brought back Starved Rock flag-raising memories

I enjoyed your article about the D.A.R. lighting the flag on top of Starved Rock which appeared in (a recent) News-Trib.

During the summer of 1954, I was employed as a maintenance worker at Starved Rock. It was a political patronage job for a college kid, but that is another story.

My first job every morning was to climb to the top of the “Rock” and raise the American Flag. The flag was kept in a locked chest at the base of the flag pole. The “Rock”, at that time, was not covered by planking as it is now. It was just bare sandstone in its natural state. It was later covered to protect it from damage from foot traffic. The path up to the top was just a trail, with a few wooden stairs. For the most part it was just a natural trail up.

At the end of each day, my last chore was to again go to the top of the “Rock” and take down and store the flag.

The flag was not flown after dark in those days.

The rest of my time was spent clearing trails, killing poison ivy, collecting garbage around the park, mowing grass and other general maintenance duties. A good summer job for a college kid.

Larry Storkman,
Earlville
