3/14/2014 12:40:00 PM Letters to the editor: IVCC doesn't need sports to prepare students for real life
This note is in regards to comments by Gene Vogelgesang in the Open Forum on March 8.
Mr. Vogelgesang’s letter supporting sports at IVCC struck a nerve. Sports at IVCC are not necessary to educate and prepare students for the realities of making a good living. There already is a good portion of our tax money going to parks and recreation. If you want to be an athlete, use those funded assets.
As far as the 2.99 GPA of the “Student Athletes” currently attending IVCC, I think that’s very good, and I’m sure they will continue to be good students without a sports program using money that’s been set aside for education.
Mr. Vogelgesang’s mention of, “The $400,000 athletic buget is only a small part of IVCC’s $40 million overall budget,” Hey, you have to start somewhere. To paraphrase the late senator, Everett Dirksen, “$400,000 here, $400 there, sooner or later you’re talking a lot of money.”
Before you ask, yes, I attended IVCC (3 semesters) and I have also participated in sports (while in high school and also while in the Air Force.) With that said, let me add this; a sports program at IVCC, that cannot support itself financially is a luxury that I don’t want to subsidise with my tax dollars.
I realize that I’m not going to change Mr. Vogelgesang’s opinion, nor will he alter mine. Hopefully the differing opinions being offered through this forum will give those “straddling the fence,” something to think about. John Basham, Hollowayville

Strike A Nerve:
IVCC FINANCIAL LOITERING:
The ONLY thing “SKYROCKETING” is the administrations annual salaries.
ICCB WEB SITE as of 2012-13: JEROME M CORCORAN Title: PRESIDENT: ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE Base Pay: $ 190,110 Benefits: $ 30,689
CHERYL ELAINE ROELFSEMA Title: VICE PRESIDENT Base Pay: $ 117,000 Benefits: $ 15,342
LORI E SCROGGS Title: VICE PRESIDENT: Base Pay: $ 117,000 Benefits: $ 15,629
SUE ISSERMAN Title: VICE PRESIDENT Base Pay as of March 2014: $113,000 Plus Benefits
When enrollments are down the administrators should lead by example and take a pay cut. That’s ridiculous of Larry Huffman to ask the student to give up a soda or a cup of coffee a day to make up for the tuition increase.
HEADS DEEP IN THE IVCC PUBLIC TROUGH
