Letters to the editor: At-large aldermen referendum a vote for less representation

If you’re still undecided about the Peru aldermen at-large concept that is coming up for a vote, think of it this way.

The answer becomes quite simple once you consider the sheer numbers involved. Are you better off having six aldermen representing the City of Peru, leaving each ward thinly represented, or are you better off with having eight aldermen? All this talk about having a smaller council offour, but strengthened with several at-large aldermen working onfilling in the chinks of communication, doesn’t cut it. Where is their allegiance when working between the wards? Six people isn’t enough to run a city in light of all the local, county, state and federal rules and regulations one has to learn and enforce. What happens when conflicts arise or vacations pop up? Who’s left running the city This not a good thing! Where are your checks and balances? Walk your neighborhoods. Talk to your aldermen. Work with your city council. Be involved in your city and go to the council meetings. They’re your meetings to build progress for the future. Keep our great City of Peru strong. It keeps the Illinois Valley strong. Vote “no” on reducing the number of aldermen that are working for you.

Gregg Maze,
Peru
