Letters to the editor: Honk your horn if you like winter road crews

Winter in La Salle and Putnam counties, just south of Peru and Spring Valley, has its own blessings.

No, not the snow, ice and extreme cold temperatures but those who are vigilant to the not-so-subtle needs of some of us ‘south of the river’ homesteaders who need safe passage from home to town and back again.

I speak to the knights in shining plow, salt and sand trucks who give the ‘bottom roaders’ and the ‘bluff dwellers’ a better-than-average chance of making it back to the house from our trips to town for whatever reasons.

Those who are entrusted to clean and keep clean such passages are our local road caretakers — a hearty breed of self-starters who rise to the needed occasion to ensure the safety of others.

If you have ever needed to use these byways in the winter months you have also thanked (albeit silently) the actual maintenance men and the Good Lord that you were able to rise above the valley floor via well-tended secondary roads.

I’m aware that this column is not for ‘thank yous’ per se… But…if you should happen upon one of these “knights” of the back roads…a toot and a wave and a doff of the cap would show them they are very much appreciated.

Ride on a road caregiver and all those like you; ride on, so that all of us can ride on more safely.

God bless you,

Rev. Paul J. Meismer
