1/12/2013 6:41:00 AM Letters to the editor: America not doing enough to confront real problems
Where in the world is our so called “great “country of America going? America’s slogan is “land of the free.” In the 21st century that definition seems to define peer-pressure, unfaithfulness, divorce, so-called “reality” television, unemployment, etc. One country under God. Since when? People are too into themselves to give a care about God. It’s all about “me-ism” now. Americans are performing on stage half undressed, spreading lies and gossip and making it the “norm” to backstab. Teenagers used to attend high school for an education; now they go to school to get into the “in” crowd, compete with one another to be trendy and to find a guy and wind up pregnant. Something is surely wrong when at school a teen needs a pain pill for a pulled muscle and the school needs a parent’s permission to give a pill. When it’s a birth control pill however, needing a parent’s permission is obsolete! We need to put the parents in charge again, not the schools! These are our children, America, we can surely do better than this. This is our future generation of America! What is wrong with the unemployment rate? I keep hearing people say there are no jobs. Really? How come any newspaper I pick up has a “help wanted” section; am I the only one who reads the paper? What is wrong with marriage in this “great” country of ours? No one can seem to stay married! One argument and it’s all over! Communication is nonexistent now. Wake-up and “smell the coffee” fellow Americans. Is this how we want to represent America? I’m just telling it like it is. We need to step up to the plate, admit our wrongs and work out our real problems! Only then can we truly say “We are proud to be Americans.” Lauren Schwarz Ottawa
