With hardly any buds on trees and not even daffodils blooming, it doesn’t feel much like spring.

But for bird watchers, the spring sights abound.

White pelicans arrived and were seen in the Illinois River backwaters the weekend of March 22-23, such as in the backwater lake south of Spring Valley.

A wide variety of smaller migratory ducks could be found at the same time in other backwaters and bodies such as Rawson Pond at Bureau. Bald eagles have not all left the area, and were at Rawson Pond and other places where there’s some ice and some open water, too.

And in late March, Jason Depenbrock snapped photos of swans in a flooded cornfield north of Walmart on the north side of Peru.
