Boats moved to high ground; Starved Rock entrance closed
NT Staff

From fishing tournaments to park outings, many weekend plans for fun are being spoiled by rain or flooding — and for many, weekend plans will be all about protecting homes from flooding or cleaning out basements after flooding.

* The Illinois River through Grundy, La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties has been closed to any boating other than emergency personnel, Illinois Department of Natural Resources noted. Other streams where boating has been restricted due to flooding are the Fox, Kankakee, DuPage, and Kishwaukee.

* For Starved Rock State Park, the west entrance road from Route 178 was closed, as well as the lower parking areas. Trail access parking areas and trails all were temporarily closed for safety reasons until further notice. Starved Rock Lodge, accessible from Route 71, remains open.

* Matthiessen State Park trails were closed Friday, but picnic areas were open. Mautino State Fish & Wildlife area near Buda was closed due to flooding as of Thursday. Illini State Park is flooded.

* Illinois Walleye Trail has postponed Sunday’s tournament scheduled for Sunday, April 21, will be postponed until Saturday, May 18. “As always, our anglers’ safety and well being always comes first,” the IWT Facebook Page read. (More details in this weekend’s truncated fishing report.)

* Obviously, boating is out of the question no Friday, April 19, and conditions aren’t even ideal for docked or dry-docked boats.

Members of Spring Valley Boat Club on the south side of the river near Route 89 were worried about the fury of the river and the well-being of their facility, as record-breaking flooding was projected.

Also, on Thursday, the owner of Starved Rock Marina was moving many boats to the high-and-dry parking lot at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Course inLa Salle.

Jeff Senica said Ron Powers is a member at the course and when the water gets high, the Senicas welcome him to use the lot to protect some of the vessels.

* HENNEPIN CANAL: Even before the heaviest of the rains arrived Thursday morning, the road to Lock 16 of the Hennepin Canal was closed due to heavy rains. Many of the roads near the canal are near flood-prone areas and near Bureau Creek and tributaries of Bureau Creek.

* WILDLIFE RUN:

Due to the excessive rain in central Illinois, the St. Francis Wildlife Trail Classic has been canceled.

The 33rd annual race/walk through the trails at Wildlife Prairie State Park in Brimfield was scheduled for Saturday. Unfortunately, some of those trails are under water and will take weeks to get back into shape.

Race entries are non-refundable. Proceeds benefit the OSF Community Wellness Fund at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Race T-shirts are available for pick-up at the RiverPlex in downtownPeoria(600 NE Water Street).
