The last state boating safety class for this year will be 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center.
This center is at 950 N. 27th Road (Dee Bennett Road) at Starved Rock Lock and Dam southeast of Utica. Phone (815) 667-4054 for information and to register.
The course covers equipment requirements, navigation rules, legal requirements, accidents, weather, trailers, visual distress signals, personal watercraft and other topics. There will be an exam. The instructors will be U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangers and an Illinois Conservation Police officer.
Students who complete the course will receive a Boating Safety Education Certificate, which is required by people 12-17 years-old who operate any motor-driven boat or personal watercraft without adult supervision.
If you need a boating card to operate a boat or personal watercraft, for insurance purposes or while vacationing in another state, you need this class.
