Archers competing in four-person teams on 45 boats did not stop the invasion of Asian bighead and silver carp this past weekend, but they certainly killed quite a few of the invaders.

Ed DeVries, organizer of the DNR Director’s Shoot/Innerloc State Bowfishing Championships on the Illinois River said an all-night shoot by the teams brought in more fish than the daytime shoot.

“Yes, the night shoot was much better,” DeVries said. He said Schafer Fisheries in Thomson called him Wednesday and said “we took 14,000 pounds of fish out of the river.”

Competing for total weight of fish shot and reeled in, the team Stone Dead Inc. brought in 235 pounds of fish; the Rough Fish Assassins weighed in 193 pounds of fish, and Team Midnight Delight recorded 161 pounds.

Team InCarperator shot 341 fish.

DeVries said more than 90 percent of the fish put in a freezer truck and brought to Schafer Fisheries were Asian carp.
