Time for bluegill
Craig Sterrett
News Editor

Fishermen throughout the Illinois Valley were reporting seeing beds near shores of area waters and expecting mature bluegill to be in the shallows and easier to catch in the days to come.

Flic Sobkowiak at Time on the Water Outdoors in Spring Valley said his boss, Frank Hyla, was fishing Lake Thunderbird and seeing beds with a bluegill nearby. He said he figures the bluegill will start spawning and be on the beds soon after any sort of temperature warm-up.

He's still hearing good reports about crappie angling at popular lakes such as Evergreen.

Despite high water and muddy conditions, catfish anglers also had success last weekend in the Illinois Catfish Trail tournament based out of Henry, he noted.

Sobkowiak said the clarity was poor this week and the river level a bit high  for good white bass fishing, but that doesn't mean the river won't be excellent within a few days.

At Cajun's shop on the south side of Utica, they were selling a lot of stink bait for catfish and night crawlers for catfish and drum (locally called sheephead) to Illinois River anglers over Memorial Day weekend.
