Tournament anglers earn their win on Walleye Trail
NT Staff

On Sunday, Oct. 7, 23 teams participated in the Hennepin Marine Fall Classic in Hennepin. It was a chilly start for the first event of the 2012-13 season.

“The bite on the Illinois Riverthe last few months has been less than desirable to say the least,” said tour coordinator Adam Sandor. “A combination of low water, no current flow and high water temps has the sauger and walleyes in a bit of a funk. Typically by this time of the year the fish are starting to stage up on flats near
areas where deep water is nearby and they put the feed bag on to bulk up for winter.”

“Despite the brutally tough conditions someone always seems to find them regardless of the conditions.

“This year’s winners of the Hennepin Marine Fall Classic were Mike Hanson and Matt Wohead. They were the only team in the field to weigh a six-fish limit.

“The duo vertical jigged an isolated structure nearly 35 miles from the launch site and scaled a total of 7.00 pounds and earned $1,500 for the efforts. Congratulations to the both of you for a hard-earned win!” Sandor wrote.

A total of just 28 fish were caught, with a total weight of 35.10 pounds. Eleven teams had no fish recorded at the weigh-in.

The next event, Sunday, Oct. 28 inSpring Valley. will be the first points qualifier for the 2012-13 season.
