Eugene E. “Gene” Donnelly, 90, of Streator passed away Aug. 19, 2014, in Heritage Health Therapy and Rehabilitation, Streator.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate. Burial will be at St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Sunday in Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 2:45 p.m.
He was born June 15, 1924, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Van and Dora (Sprain) Donnelly. He married Margaret Mary Soltis on Aug. 22, 1951, in St. Stephen’s Church, Streator. They were married by Fr. Vladimir Sors.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Tim) Sullivan of Streator; sons, Michael (Mary) Donnelly of Bloomington and Richard (Christine) Donnelly of Normal; grandchildren, Michael and James Sullivan, Matthew, John, Sarah and Ben Donnelly; and Michelle Thompson; a sister in law, Mary Full of Mendota; brother in law, Ray “Budzo” Soltis of Streator; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his wife on March 4, 2007; his wife; sisters, Frances Hill, Anna Hill and Dorothy Brewer, and Marie in infancy; and brothers, George, Robert and Richard Donnelly.
He attended Iowa schools. He came to Streator in the late 1940s.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II along with his brothers, George, Robert and Richard from 1943 until 1946.
He worked as a meat cutter for Buehler’s Market for more than 40 years. He was a member of the meat cutters union.
He was a member of the former St. Stephen’s Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish. He was a life member of both Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790 and the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 214.
Gene was proud of the fact that he earned his pilot’s license. He was also an avid golfer and bowler through the years having participated in the Knights of Columbus leagues. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, especially euchre and 31.
He was also a big fan of polka music and polka dancing.
He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael and James Sullivan, Matthew, John and Ben Donnelly; and a grandson in law, Jonathan Thompson. 3rd Degree members of Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.
