Nila Woods

Nila Rose Woods, 74, of Mendota died Aug. 15, 2014, in her residence.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Her brother in Christ, Dewitt Willis will conduct the service. Burial will be at Troy Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Nila was born March 11, 1940, in Petersburg, Ind., to Robert Sherman and Olive Marie (Frederick) Willis. She graduated from Petersburg High School, Petersburg, Ind., in 1958. Nila was a remarkable person, since a very young age she was very independent, worked hard and always knew the value of a dollar. She worked for her uncle Gilbert Frederick on the farm and performed household chores until the age of 12. While in high school she opened and worked after school at her aunt Roxie’s grocery store. This is where she met and later married Jack (Lorrell M.) Woods on July 3, 1958, in Petersburg, Ind. After marriage they moved to Princeton, Ind., where she was a trusted assistant and employee in a music store. In 1963 they moved to Mendota where she was employed as a lab technician at Trekker Chemical Co. and worked part time as a sales clerk at Spurgeon’s Department Store. In 1991 she worked for Fasco/ADM until retirement in 2012.
She is survived by her husband of Mendota; three daughters, Ginger (Jeff) Miller of Elgin, Gaylene (David) Thompson of Troy Grove and Alison Woods of Kenosha, Wis.; three grandchildren, Grant Thompson (Lindsey Chrencick), James Giacometti and Leslie Thompson; one great-grandson, Ezra Onyx Thompson; three stepgrandchildren, Jayme (Arnel) Miller-Flores, Ryan Miller and Zach Miller; and one stepgreat-grandson, Drake Flores. She also is survived by eight brothers and sisters all of Indiana, Wanna Day, Robert Willis, Marlene (Jim) Naylor, Dewitt (Donna) Willis, Beth Willis, Alva (Ella) Willis, James Willis, Clare (Gary) Popp and two brothers-in-law, Tom (Mazo) Woods of Indiana and Bill (Anita) Woods of Nebraska. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Nila was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Imolou Schwoob.
Memorials may be directed to Illinois Valley Animal Rescue and Illinois Valley Hospice.
