Joan M. Groene, 89, of Ladd, loving wife, mother, grandmother and a friend to many, passed away at 7:15 a.m. July 8, 2014, with her loving husband Lou at her side along with the loving caregivers of Garden Court in Manor Court in Peru.
Cremation rites have been accorded per her wish. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church (Mautino Drive location), Spring Valley. The Rev. Robert Spilman will officiate. Burial will be private.
Memorial visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday in the church. Burgess Funeral Home, La Salle, is handling the arrangements.
She was born March 5, 1925, in Streator to Charles and Helen (Fallon) Heath. She was one of nine children.
She married Howard Bauman on Oct. 16, 1944, in Utica. They were married 20 years until his passing on July 9, 1964. She married Floyd “Lou” Groene on June 25, 1973, and lived in Ladd.
She worked at Westclox in Peru for more than 20 years. She was a member for several years of the former St. Anthony’s Church in Spring Valley. She was an excellent seamstress, quilter and creating her unique crafts. She was a long-standing member of the Quilters Guild. She would make lap quilts and donate them to the children of St. Luke’s Children Hospital. Over the years she presented her family and friends with several homemade items to be kept as a remembrance of her. She and Lou worked at the homeless shelter for many of years. Her and Lou had a passion to travel and would do it extensively when they could.
Survivors are her husband, Lou; two daughters, Madelynn “Maggie” (Curt) Estwing of Rockford and Margaret (Robert) Thacker of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren, Amy, Nathan, Vincent (Kim) Thacker, Jason (Claire) Giglio, Emily (Keith) Wilhelms; two great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Amelia Thacker; three brothers, Paul, Phil and Mac Heath; one sister, Patricia Schuller; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Sy, Gene, Dick and Leo.
Memorials may be directed to her family to be distributed to her favorite charities.
