Monsignor Richard Fitzsimmons
Monsignor Richard G. Fitzsimmons, 83, of Batavia, formerly of Lincoln and Mendota, died June 16, 2014, in his Batavia residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Cross Church, Mendota with Bishop Daniel Jenky officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thur-sday, with a rosary recited at 3:45 p.m., in the church. Visitation also will be 9-10 a.m. Friday in the church. Schwarz Funeral Home, Mendota provided the arrangements.
He was born June 29, 1930, in Lincoln to Joseph Emmette and Mary Catherine (Fahey) Fitzsimmons.
He attended St. Patrick School in Lincoln, 1936-1946; St. Bede Academy in Peru, 1946-1948; St. Bede College in Peru, 1948-1950; St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, 1950-1952; Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, 1952-1956; and was ordained on May 27, 1956.
He served as assistant pastor at St. Roch’s, La Salle in 1956; pastor at St. Patrick’s, Wappella and St. Mary’s, Downs, 1968; Vicar Adjutor at St. Roch’s, La Salle, 1970; pastor, Resurrection Church, La Salle, 1979; St. Mary’s, Westville, 1984; Holy Cross Church, Mendota, 1988; College of Consultors, 1990; pastor, Holy Cross Church, Mendota, and Sts. Peter and Paul, Peterstown, 1991; vicar, La Salle Vicariate, 1992; Prelate of Honor, 1993; Senior priest status and Pastor Emeritus, 2000.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and caregivers, the Albright family of Batavia.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Joe Fitzsimmons, Bob Fitzsimmons, Pat Fitzsimmons, Tommy Fitzsimmons and Jack Fitzsimmons.
Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
