Jay was born July 8, 1937, in Spring Valley to Gladys Cox Hansen and John Jay Hansen. He married Joanne Franco on Feb. 14, 1956. Together for 58 years, she recently passed Feb. 9, 2014. Twenty-six of those years from 1980-2006 were spent working in the Brewmaster Supper Club as co-owners. He was the bar manager there for all of those years and was a good friend to many of his customers and employees.
Jay graduated from St. Bede Academy and also attended the junior college there. He worked for Western Southern Life Insurance Co. for 20 years and served several years as chairman of the Putnam County Board. Always a music enthusiast, he played drums growing up. He was an Eagle Scout and was always very proud of that accomplishment.
He was a past member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Henry and most recently a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Peru. He and his wife enjoyed boating with their friends and were members of the Henry Yacht Club. Along with boating he enjoyed karaoke and was known for his Sinatra renditions. He and his wife moved to the Ozarks after retiring but returned to Peru five years ago to spend more time with family. Grandpa Jay especially enjoyed taking family and friends out on his patio.
Jay celebrated life with his deceased wife Joanie; daughter, Cynthia (Chris) Gedraitis of Peru, son John Hansen of La Salle; daughter, Jill (Rick) Fanti of Peru; grandchildren Christopher (Kaylyn) Gedraitis, Tyler Hansen, Shaina Hansen, Dominic Fanti, Angelica Fanti; and great-grandchildren, Christopher, Bernadette, Nolan and Evey Gedraitis; and brother, Jody (Judy) Koehler.
Along with his wife Joanie, he will be joining his granddaughter, Alicia Gedraitis (April 13, 1995), his parents, Gladys Koehler and John Hansen, stepfather, Elmer Koehler and his beloved grandmother, Edna Cox on his next journey.
