Ellis S. Smith, 89, of Walnut died April 23, 2014, in Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport, Iowa.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday in Red Oak United Methodist Church of Walnut with the Rev. Judy Giese officiating.  Burial will be at Walnut Cemetery with military rites accorded by Walnut American Legion.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday in Garland Funeral Home, Walnut, with the rosary recited at 7 p.m.

Ellis was born March 14, 1925, in Kirksville, Mo., to Floyd and Eva Mae Shelton. He married Rose Marie Smith on Nov. 23, 1950, in Kirksville.

Ellis served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He attended Kirksville State Teachers College and majored in agriculture. He was employed as a salesman for Mid-South Chemical Co. for many years and Stamm Manufacturing in Watseka. He was a member of Red Oak United Methodist Church of Walnut and Walnut American Legion Post 179. Ellis enjoyed dancing, singing and flying. He also enjoyed his friendship with the bridge club for many years.

He is survived by four sons, Brian Smith of Walnut, Kevin Smith of Walnut, Dennis (Laurel) Smith of Fairfax, Va., and David (Janet) Smith of Walnut; four daughters, Ellison Elaine (Primo) Custodio of Chatsworth, Calif., Gina (Jim) Wilkinson of Mount Carroll, Ellen (Paul) Brousseau of Walnut and Patricia (Lee) Jackson of Bellevue, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Eldon (Nora) Smith of Palm Springs, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 11, 2004; one son, Lawrence; and daughter-in-law, Pam.

A memorial has been established.
