John George “Jack” Hooley, 85, resident of Heritage Health, Peru, died March 17, 2014, in the nursing home after a long illness.
A memorial service will be in Rockford at a later date. Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, is assisting the family.
Mr. Hooley was born June 3, 1928, in Lynn, Mass., to William Francis and Florence (Curtis) Hooley.
Jack received his bachelor of science degree from Xavier University in 1950 and later his Juris Doctor from Chase Law School. He worked for many years in the insurance industry before deciding to return to the practice of law. He opened a private practice in 1975. Jack later served as an assistant public defender in the Winnebago County Public Defender’s Office for a number of years. He was particularly proud of his work on a case prohibiting the forced institutionalization of a man suffering with mental illness, but who did not present a danger to himself or the community. In 1978, he became an assistant state’s attorney in the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1993.
Jack enjoyed many hobbies throughout the course of his life including model trains, fishing, skeet-shooting, sailing, skiing, riding his motorcycle and photography; his children will attest he was the consummate basement tinkerer. A favorite project was participating in the planning and creation of the annual haunted house for his local church fair.
In his later years, Jack was lovingly cared for by his son, Jim and daughter-in-law Martha in their home in Utica. He spent the last three years of his life in the Heritage Health Nursing Home in Peru.
He is survived by his children, John G. (Jay) Hooley Jr. of Thornton, Colo., James Curtis (Martha) Hooley of Utica, Erin Marie (Mark) Carper of Cumming, Ga., Elizabeth (Roger) Land of Powder Springs, Ga., and Christian Xavier (Day) Hooley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his grandson, Evan Nicholas Land; and his nieces and nephews, Michael, Patti, Billy, Debbie and Patrick of California.
Jack was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Robert Hooley in 2003; his brother, William, and his sister, Patricia.
Memorials can be directed to American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. A guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.bartofh.com.
