Janet L. Whalen, 69, of Streator passed away Dec. 26, 2013, in Manor Court in Peru. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, Streator. The Rev. Jacob Rose will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator. Visitation will be 8:30-11 a.m. Monday in Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. She was born April 15, 1944, in Streator to Edward and Margaret “Marge” (Leonard) Handzus. She married Robert C. Whalen on June 11, 1962, in Immaculate Conception Church, Streator. He died Oct. 21, 2006. Born and raised in Streator, she attended St. Anthony Grade School and graduated from Streator High School class of 1962. Janet worked at Krogers in her younger days. She also was a teacher aide at Greeley School for several years. For many years she worked in catering at the Knights of Columbus and also watched children at her home. She was a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was a member of Democratic Women and served as a precinct committee woman and an election judge. She is survived by one daughter, Julie (Paul) Menendez of Bloomington; one son, Jeff (Lori) Whalen of Utica; grandchildren, Allison and Samantha Whalen and Jordan and Jenny Menendez; sisters, Agnes (John) Sauers of Streator and Barbara (Raymond) Miller of Streator; brothers, Edward (Ruth) Handzus of Streator, John (Linda) Handzus of Streator, Richard Handzus of Ottawa, Bernard (Rachel) Handzus of Dwight, Andrew Handzus of Streator and Ronald (Janet) Handzus of Streator. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a niece, Lori Leonard; and nephews, Mark Sauers and John Handzus Jr. Memorials may be directed St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru, Illinois Hand Bell Choir or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru, Illinois Youth Group. Janet’s brothers and sisters will serve as pallbearers.
