Herbert R. “Herb” Hurt, 78, of Henry died at 2:14 p.m. Dec. 13, 2013, in St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Henry Presbyterian Church,. The Rev. Steven Hill will officiate. Burial will be at Henry Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday and an hour prior to services Tuesday in the church. Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home, Henry is in charge of arrangements. Herb was born May 3, 1935, in Henry to Harry Ross and Lucille M. (Hall) Hurt. He married Marilyn J. Chance on Aug. 4, 1957, in Henry. Herb graduated from Henry High School, Western Illinois University and Bradley University with a masters degree. Herb was a teacher, guidance counselor for 25 years and a basketball coach for nine years with the Serena School District. He retired after 33 years with the school district. Herb was a member of Henry Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Men, and the Marshall-Putnam and Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He also was a member of Charles Perdew Museum Association. Herb was an avid sports fan, especially the Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed spending time in Canada fishing and being with his family. He touched the lives of many of his students during his years of teaching. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Pamela Lynn (Dave) Cheley of Bloomington, three grandchildren, Andrew, Jacob and Tyler; two sisters, Sheilah (Eugene) Steele and Jan (Jerry) Henderson, both of Henry; and one sister-in-law, Connie Swanson, of Henry.
