Raymond E. “Rotten Ray” Simmons, 63, of Rutland passed away peacefully Dec. 6, 2013, in his home surrounded by his loved ones. Private graveside services will be at noon Sunday at Hillcrest Cemetery, Streator, with the Rev. Peter M. Glock officiating. Military services will be conducted. A public celebration of life will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday in Park Place Restaurant, Wenona. Hurst Funeral Home, Wenona, is assisting the family. Ray was born April 11, 1950, in Streator to Ezra and Eileen (Melvin) Simmons. He attended Wenona High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He worked at Moon Grain, Tabor Grain and ADM for 30 years and later helped farm. Ray served the community of Wenona as a volunteer member of the Wenona Ambulance and Wenona Fire Department, serving as chief for several years. He also was an active member of Wenona American Legion Post 8. Ray is survived by his daughter, Soemer of Normal; his companion, Pat Garretson and her great-grandson Benji; four brothers, James (Dianna) Simmons, Rocky (Paulette) Simmons, William (Deborah) Simmons and John (Barb) Simmons; two sisters, Sally (Dan) Bane and Susie (Robert) Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Ray will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
