Margery W. Steele, 93, passed away June 20, 2013. Services will be announced a later date at Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton.
She was born July 17, 1920, in Michigan City, Ind., to George and Marion (Whiteley) Phelan. She graduated from Kingston High School in New York and attended New York City Business College.
She worked for the War Department in the OSS which later became the CIA. She served in North Africa, Egypt and Greece. Margery married Harold Steele on Oct 12, 1946, first in a civil ceremony and on the following day, Oct. 13, 1946, in a military ceremony in Vienna, Austria.
She was an active member of First Congregational Church of Peru and a past active member of Dover Congregational Church. Other clubs and organizations Margery participated in include: secretary-treasurer of Steele Farms, Sunday school teacher at Dover Congregational Church, American Red Cross Board for 15 years, Dover Grade School Board, Bureau County United Way, Camp Fire Girls Leader, hosted students and was on the board for American Field Service and Bureau Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club, where she was woman of the year in 1980.
Margery is survived by her husband of nearly 67 years, Harold Steele of Princeton. Also surviving are four children, Greg (Sandra) Steele of Dover, Linda (Noel) Hobbs of Aurora, Colo., Becky (Tom) Hall of Princeton and Susan (Mike) Teslow of Houston, Texas; two AFS foreign exchange daughters, Dr. Akke Van der Zijpp of the Netherlands and Kyoko (Shinobo) Tanaka of Japan; five grandchildren, Kristopher (Dawn) Hall, Alanna (Evan Rapoport) Hobbs, Captain Chad and (Dr. Michelle) Foreman, Katie (Michael) Baldwin and Rachel Foreman; two foreign grandchildren, Karin and Jumi Yamada; two great-grandsons Jacob Foreman and Ieppi Tanaka; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
