Judith Louise Lechner, 74, of Sarasota, Fla., passed away April 27, 2013.

Judy was born May 22, 1938, in Spring Valley to Arthur and Mary (Gerace) Bump.

Judy will be giving her body to medical education and research. Services will be May 5 at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home and Crematory, Sarasota. A viewing will be offered 3:30-4 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 4 p.m. Afterwards, a
gathering to remember Judy will be at 5 p.m. at Serenoa Country Club, Sarasota.

After living in Illinois and Michigan, she became a full-time resident of Sarasota in 1981.

A deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Judy truly cherished spending time with her family and friends. Her family was most fortunate to have such a selfless, caring, affectionate, strong and principled person in their lives. Friends admired Judy’s thoughtful words and ways, her warm and welcoming smile and cheerful disposition.

Judy earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from Western Michigan University, and taught junior high school in Michigan. Her volunteer activities included assisting disabled veterans at Hines Hospital and leading Girl Scouts. An avid traveler, reader and golfer, Judy also enjoyed bridge and bunco, cooking and entertaining.

Judy died from a very rare cancer, merkel cell carcinoma. For nearly two years, she faced adversity with a positive attitude, courage and grace. Judy and her family greatly appreciate the kindness and efforts of the medical community, and are most grateful for the outpouring of love and support. The numerous offers of help, visits, phone calls, cards, e-mails and beautiful flowers and gifts were most meaningful to Judy, bringing joy to difficult days.

She is survived by David, her loving husband of 57 years; one daughter, Mary Ellis of Sarasota; cherished granddaughter, Kristin Ellis of Washington, D.C.; brothers James (Susan) Bump of Umatilla, Fla., and Dominic (Shirley) Bump of La Salle; one sister-in-law, Dian (William) Taylor of Winnetka; and, many dear family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family requests that donations in Judy’s honor be directed to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL  34238.
