Services have been scheduled for Gene Lois Young, 88, of Peru, who passed away Nov. 27, 2012, at Manor Court of Peru.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Golf Club, La Salle. Arrangements are by Mueller Funeral Home, Peru.
Ms. Young was born May 20, 1924, in Easton, Pa., to John and Nellie (Blank) Young. She later moved to Wellsville, N.Y.
Gene graduated from the University of Roches-ter with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She was the director of nursing at Methodist School of Nursing in Peoria and was a faculty member at Illinois Valley Community College until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in La Salle, Delta Kappa Gamma and Illinois Valley Women’s Club.
Gene was a woman who loved life and lived it to its full extent. She backpacked across Europe in the 1950s, staying in hostels and working in various hospitals. Her love of travel took her across the United States, Canada and Europe.
Gene never missed an opportunity to help a friend or student. It was not unusual for her to house a student for an overnight or for several semesters as the need arose. She was a loyal friend to all. Gene loved her garden and her animals, taking in many strays. Her flower garden was exquisite.
Survivors include two nieces, Pamela Thames of Seal Beach, Calif., and Margaret (Santiago) Etchevers of Kirkland, Wash.; one great-niece, Maialen; and a great-nephew, Marc.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack Young.
Memorial donations may be directed to Illinois Valley Community College Foundation for nursing scholarships.
