Gerald Edward Spires, 88, of Princeton passed away March 17, 2013, in Illinois Veterans Home, La Salle.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Christ Community Church. Brian Strom and Rev. Frank Brozenec will officiate. Burial will follow at Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Princeton on March 22. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 125.
The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton.
Mr. Spires was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Ramsey to Thomas and Elsie (Cliffton) Spires. He married Gertie Moreland on Nov. 2, 1946, in Decatur.
He served in the U.S. Navy 1944-1946. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was a boatswain. He farmed near the Ashton/Franklin Grove area for most of his life.
He was a member of Christ Community Church. He was a former member and deacon of the Baptist Church in Amboy, where he also was secretary/treasurer of the Sunday school program. Gerald also sang in Spires Family Quartet.
Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Gertie Spires of Princeton; one son, Gerald (Tana) Spires Jr. of Rochelle; three grandchildren, Heather (Jeff) Jasper, Ryan (Sarah) Spires and Shane (Amy) Stark; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandsons; one stepgreat-great-grandson; one sister, Pearl Tadys of Buffalo, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Diane Stark in 2008; and two brothers and four sisters.
Memorials may be directed to Christ Community Church or Illinois Veterans Home at La Salle.
