Amazing Race Episode 1: We're not in Oklahoma anymore!

Welcome Race fans! Sunday was the night we've been waiting for as the show's 23rd season premiered.

During Sunday’s opener, Phil asked a team, “What’s the No. 1 rule of the Amazing Race?” and one of the team members responded, “Read the clue.”

Travis, one of a team of ER doctors along with his wife Nicole, knew the golden rule of the Race yet he and his wife broke it the first leg.

The pair didn’t read the clue all the way through and went to the pit stop by taxi but needed to go on foot. They incurred a 30-minute penalty and ended up finishing second and losing out on the Express Pass.

Two other teams made mistakes by not properly reading a clue, resulting in the wrong partner starting a Road Block.

When will people learn.

Despite the clue reading miscues, it was an entertaining premiere and this season — as always — includes an interesting cast of characters, including ex-NFL teammates, MLB wives and exes.

The teams started a trip to Chile with paragliding — it seems the opening challenge lately always involves heights, thus precluding my mother from the Race — and continued with a tough rowing challenge.

We’ll see if this cast can straighten themselves out and start reading clues — I doubt it — and hopefully we’ll have another interesting and entertaining season.

Read the blog every Sunday for my thoughts on the episode, and please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Order of Finish:

1. Tim and Marie (exes, won Express Pass)
2.  Nicole and Travis (married doctors)
3. Roman and Shane (friends and castmates in a plate)
4. Chester and Emphraim (former NFL players)
5. Nicky and Kim (friends, baseball wives)
6. Ally and Ashley (friends, L.A. Kings Ice Crew Girls)
7. Leo and Jamal (cousins)
8. Jason and Amy (dating)
9. Tim and Danny (friends)
10. Brandon and Adam (friends)
11. Naina and Hoskote (father and daughter) ELIMINATED

Season Predictions: Last season, brothers who played professional hockey won the Race, so I’m going to stick with that theme and pick former NFL teammates Chester and Ephraim. My fiancée Justina considered them, but picked ER doctors Tim and Nicole.

Thumbs Up: To the ER doctors and cousins Leo and Jamal for speaking fluent Spanish. That can definitely be a big plus on the Race and certainly eased their communication Sunday. Nora’s was the Indian father Hoskote going home. He really got on her nerves.

Thumbs Down: To cousins Leo and Jamal for calling themselves the “Afghanimals.” I found this pair quite annoying from the nickname to the screaming while he was paragliding. Hopefully they tone it down a notch or 12.

Best moment: There wasn’t anything great so I’ll go with some classic fall down humor. I got a good laugh when Leo fell in the boat right after getting in.

Quotes of the Week: “We’re not looking for love, but if it happens …” Ally with teammate Ashley interrupting her to say, “Ally, you have a boyfriend, what are you talking about?”

I couldn’t pick just one so I’m also including, “It looked like a military jeep on a parachute,” Ephraim on the site of Chester coming down from paragliding.

And Nora liked, “Go Ally! I love you. My wife just flew off with another man!”

Question of the Week:
Who do you think will win Season 23 of The Amazing Race?
