Seta Whitford-Stark was dumbfounded last year when she found out her daughter Amy quit her job at an employee-recruiting agency to work for LinkedIn, an Internet company that Seta had never heard of. Amy tried to explain what the online professional networking service did, but Seta couldn’t quite grasp the concept or why the 29-year-old would want to work there.“Oh my God, what has she gotten herself into?” Seta, 73, recalls muttering to herself.

Fall follies
It’s the middle of the night and the storm woke me up. It is raining cats and dogs and yeah, “The Farmer” and I got all our fall chores done yesterday. He had the garlic beds ready yesterday because that Adams-Meyer calendar that the implement dealer in Vincennes, Ind., sends me each year said Tuesday was the day to plant bulbs. However, the weather report called for rain and not wanting to plant the garlic in the mud, we planted it late Monday afternoon. We planted more than 200. Usually we plant a couple of hundred more, but not this year.

Check - Driver's license renewed
As most of you know, in just a couple of days I will turn 80 years old. Now if that isn’t amazing enough, to still be able to write a weekly “term paper,” what I call my weekly column, is amazing to me. Plus, I had to renew my driver’s license last week. I dreaded it because they have moved our testing station way out by highway 39 or do they call that an interstate? All I know is it is congested with big trucks and to get there is like a web of detours and road repairs.

Green tomatoes and eggs
A week or so ago, when the old retired dairy farmer, down the road, said he would take some of our red tomatoes, “The Farmer” delivered a few to him and in exchange we received a dozen pullet eggs.

Vintage clothing seamstress' passion

Women gliding down the wedding aisle 111 years ago could seek material assistance if their bodies had been jilted by capricious genetics. Fashion requirements around 1902 suggested the bride’s radiance would be enhanced by a full bosom and that, of course, posed a problem if you didn’t happen to have one. The haute couture answer, according to vintage clothing expert Nancy Torgerson, was “bust ruffles.”

Stories not stones give some jewelry its value
It’s the story, not necessarily the stone or other bells and whistles, that gives jewelry shared between generations its high value. And there is so often a good, interesting and meaningful story since many people get or give jewelry to commemorate an event or send a message: It could be a birthday or anniversary, a statement of love or gratitude. But, says Annabel Tollman, a top industry stylist, a pendant, earrings or bracelet “are rarely exchanged because it’s Tuesday.”
