What's in the 'party jar'? Nothing ... yet.

Julie Moore puts a finishing touch to a funerary urn at her home studio in Apex, N.C. Cremations in the United States have tripled since 1985, accounting for about 44 percent of all "dispositions," according to the Cremation Association of North America. Moore uses found objects and fabrics that belonged to the deceased to create urns that are more works of art than reminders of death.

Of all the pieces Julie Moore crafts in her home studio, the most popular is a brightly colored fabric vessel she calls “the party jar.”

There's more to love about salad
For most of us, salads are mainly unplanned affairs. Which is why the idea of salad cookbooks can seem kind of silly.

He's not lost his marbles
A marble is a small spherical toy usually made of colored glass, once prized by boys, now prized by collectors and those steeped in nostalgia. During the Great Depression, boys played a game in a dirt circle shooting marbles with the objective of knocking out the opponents’ marbles and thus adding to his collection. Every boy had a sack of marbles. Wayne Cruitt, 87, of rural Findlay never stopped collecting.

Goodbye, Cousin Leo
When I finally got a full-time job with a regional paper as the farm editor, my first in-office assignment was to do reports on weddings and obituaries. That was a good 50 years ago and when they were written before my time, my mother always found something funny in them. Being my mother’s daughter, I also found something amusing about those dissertations. I lasted one-half hour on that assignment then moved on to report about the farming world.

Vintage clothing seamstress' passion

Women gliding down the wedding aisle 111 years ago could seek material assistance if their bodies had been jilted by capricious genetics. Fashion requirements around 1902 suggested the bride’s radiance would be enhanced by a full bosom and that, of course, posed a problem if you didn’t happen to have one. The haute couture answer, according to vintage clothing expert Nancy Torgerson, was “bust ruffles.”

Stories not stones give some jewelry its value
It’s the story, not necessarily the stone or other bells and whistles, that gives jewelry shared between generations its high value. And there is so often a good, interesting and meaningful story since many people get or give jewelry to commemorate an event or send a message: It could be a birthday or anniversary, a statement of love or gratitude. But, says Annabel Tollman, a top industry stylist, a pendant, earrings or bracelet “are rarely exchanged because it’s Tuesday.”
