What's in a lunch?
I’d like to send this column to First Lady Michelle Obama concerning her thoughts and plans and “fight” with the “House Republican effort to soften a central part of her prized anti-childhood obesity campaign. She says she’s ready ‘to fight until the bitter end’,” according to an AP story out of Washington. Mrs. Obama, your efforts are commendable, but you are barking up the wrong tree.

Commercial School meant business

In the mid-1900s, La Salle-Peru-Oglesby businesses looking for a secretary ready to work with minimal training needed would look no further than St. Joseph’s Commercial School, Peru. But 60 years ago this week, the NewsTribune opinion page carried an editorial, “A Tri-City Asset Goes.” That’s because 1954 was the year St. Joseph’s Parish decided to close the two-year business school that had produced a steady stream of 16- and 17-year-old graduates who were trained to thrive in business offices.

Butterflies fight back

The thought that her grandchildren might never see a monarch butterfly terrifies Mary Kowalski. So Kowalski is nurturing five monarch caterpillars she found on the milkweed plants outside her DeKalb home in hopes they will transform into the iconic orange and black winged insects. Kowalski’s fears aren’t far-fetched, some local experts say.

Child of immigrant - Fanano to New York
One of the saddest things for me over this last Fourth of July was to watch the reports and pictures of the number of immigrant children crossing into the southern borders of some of our western states — alone. I think it hit me because my mother was an immigrant coming through Ellis Island from Fanano, Italy. She was but 2 years old and she and her mother traveled, probably with some relatives. Her father had come two years earlier to find work and then sent for them.

At Elvis Fest, impersonations are reverent tribute
The white-suited, chest hair-baring, blue contact-wearing men posing with fans outside the showroom of the former Las Vegas Hilton don’t want to be called Elvis impersonators. The correct term is Elvis tribute artist — or ETA for short — to distinguish their studied performances from the dime-a-dozen characters trolling the Strip.

A book worm
How much more rain can we take? Hopefully, by the time you read this, the rain has subsided a bit. Having said all that, with the kind of weather we have been having, either hot and muggy or raining, are you having problems keeping your children or grandchildren occupied? May I suggest reading? Oh, what a bore, you say. How can I ever get my kids away from the computer and television to read?

Jack Bradley has spent his entire life through the eye of a lens, capturing the beauty and truth of the Midwest region to the harsh reality of war. From spending his time hovering in a press helicopter while a train crash explosion nearly engulfed his vehicle with a mushroom of flames, to shooting the battle fields of the Korean War, Bradley spent his life in middle of the action documenting every second.

Vintage clothing seamstress' passion

Women gliding down the wedding aisle 111 years ago could seek material assistance if their bodies had been jilted by capricious genetics. Fashion requirements around 1902 suggested the bride’s radiance would be enhanced by a full bosom and that, of course, posed a problem if you didn’t happen to have one. The haute couture answer, according to vintage clothing expert Nancy Torgerson, was “bust ruffles.”
