'50s trend an Internet sensation

During the Depression, former kindergarten teacher Violet Shinbach canvassed Ohio neighborhoods looking for yards with wading pools, tricycles and toys strewn about. She knew the young mothers who lived in those houses were prospective customers for her fledgling entrepreneurial enterprise: bronzing baby shoes. Despite the hard times, the business took off and endured. By the early 1970s, the Bron-Shoe Co. in Columbus was bronzing 2,000 shoes a day and sending them all over the country.

Not the Chisholm
Where do I begin to tell the story? When I first met “The Farmer” many moons ago, he was the herdsman at Red Dot Potato Chip Co. in Rhinelander, Wis. By the time we married, he had changed jobs and became the manager of a doctor-owned farm in Waukesha, Wis. He managed what was then registered Hereford cattle as well as registered quarter horses, with a few hogs thrown in for good pork chops.

Craft beer boom benefits wine industry
About 50 million cases of beer were purchased on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s no wonder Anheuser-Busch, America’s largest brewer, purchased 3½ minutes of ad time during the big game. Two of the beer company’s commercials were widely praised. Bud Light’s spot made virtually every viewer hope for an epic evening in a life-sized Pac-Man maze. Budweiser’s tale of a lost puppy finding his way home melted millions of hearts. But Anheuser-Busch’s third commercial, which mocked craft beer and the people who enjoy it, left a bitter taste in the mouths of many football fans.

Rare Shoeless Joe
Sharon Bowen thought her late husband was a bit crazy for buying a scrapbook filled with black and white photos of Cleveland ballplayers from the early 1900s — but not anymore. It turns out that book held what may be the only autographed photo of Shoeless Joe Jackson, the Holy Grail of baseball signatures.

'Still Alice' highlights hidden toll of Alzheimer's
Her performance as a vibrant woman fading into the darkness of Alzheimer’s is doing more than earning awards for actress Julianne Moore. The movie “Still Alice” is raising awareness of a disease too often suffered in isolation, even if the Hollywood face is younger than the typical real-life patient.

A job well done
Alan Heid, 87, has plowed the same driveway for 46 years. His age can’t stop him from performing his classic chore. “I can’t quit now, I have to try to keep going. I have days where I don’t want to plow, but I’ve just got to do it anyway,” Heid said. Heid switched from using a shovel to walk-behind snow blower in 1979, the snowiest winter he can recall.

Something goes 'pop' in the night
I give up. It has been one of those nights, and it is just an hour or two away from the time, 5 a.m., I get up, because I’m usually so hungry. But last night, I went to bed ready for a good night’s sleep and had been listening to my hypnosis disc. I was breathing fine in through my nose, holding it, then letting that breathe out through my mouth.

Why do you squint?
Carol Witkowski of Mendota sports a pair of Juicy Couture glasses in blue that darken every time she steps outside. Compared to other prescription eyeglasses, she said this is her favorite pair. “I don’t squint like Mr. Magoo,” she said while walking her dog through a snow-covered park. The classic cartoon character of the 1950s and 1960s isn’t the only one squinting when the winter sun hits the snow.
