For men, the risk reduction was just 26 percent.
Women with heart failure are less likely to get a special kind of pacemaker than men, but more likely to benefit from the device, a government analysis suggests. The findings come from the first study of its kind conducted by researchers at the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has done similar analyses of prescription drugs, but not of medical devices, said lead author Dr. David Strauss, an FDA medical officer.

The thriving edible marijuana industry in Colorado is preparing for new testing requirements — due to take in effect in October — to make sure the products are safe to eat and drink.

The boys headed out to the barn to find the chickens, the youngest one called out, “Watch out, poop.” Scout Fitzpatrick, almost 2, and his big brother, Bear, 4, step around a few spots before chasing the chickens. On the way back into the house, their father, Dan, scoops up the youngest and follows Bear to the bathroom where they promptly wash their hands after leaving their shoes in the breezeway.

Art inspires cancer patients
Victoria Manheim, a senior in art from Illinois State University, painted a scene based on a pencil sketch by Roberta Fuller. Fuller, holding the pencil and sitting beside Manheim, suggested colors as Manheim painted while balancing the canvas on her lap. “I sketched what gives me hope,” said Fuller, 55, of Bloomington.

Flip flops: Foot friend or foe

Simple in design and inexpensive in price, flip-flops may seem like the perfect footwear as the temperature rises, but experts warn against them. The American Podiatric Medical Association warns that the lightweight sandals can increase the likelihood of experiencing tendinitis, stress fractures and other injuries. “The biggest thing is it doesn’t offer the foot a lot of support,” said Dr. Larry Ketner, a Peru podiatrist.
