Pediatricians' Rx for schools
Students file to their lockers after class at La Salle-Peru Township High School. Delaying the start of the school day for teens until at least 8:30 a.m. would help curb their lack of sleep, which has been linked with poor health, bad grades, car crashes and other problems, the American Academy of Pediatrics says in a new policy. Pediatricians have a new prescription for schools: later start times for teens. The influential group says teens are especially at risk; for them, “chronic sleep loss has increasingly become the norm.”

Making night in the day
Melissa Girton of Oglesby works the night shift. She needs to block out the daylight in order to sleep. “I keep everything shut really, really tight,” she said. She closes the blinds and uses room-darkening shades in her bedroom. “It usually is enough to block out enough so that I can sleep.” Most people prefer to darken their bedrooms while sleeping in the daytime, but less concern is shown for the nighttime lights that they are typically exposed to.

What does it mean!?!?
When your milk hits the date on the container, do you pour it out and crack open another jug? If so, you are pouring money and food down the drain, according to food experts. The date on milk is a “sell by” date. It helps the store rotate and stock milk. Generally, milk is safe and wholesome 7 to 10 days after the “sell by” date, according to University of Illinois Extension Service.

Zippin' through nature

Winding through the countryside leading to Menno Haven Camp & Retreat Center is good for the soul, but flying 45 feet in the air through the forest is incomparable. For many, the time spent on Menno Haven’s ropes course, specifically on the 470-foot zip line, serves as the ultimate destressor, seeing the world from a birds-eye view.
