Right on the nose
Got sinus issues? Dr. Brandon Musgrave, in a demonstration in his Peru office, uses a balloon to widen the tiny sinus openings and bring relief for people who suffer from chronic infections and other disorders. The still-new procedure works by inflating a balloon inserted into the sinus cavity, crushing the low-density bone tissue to widen the orifice from 1 millimeter to 6 millimeters. Musgrave said short-term studies show an excellent rate of success, with significantly less pain and recovery time than with traditional sinus surgery.NewsTribune photo/Scott Anderson

Katherine Kendall had “four or five” sinus infections in a row and could not take anymore. Desperate for relief, the Mendota student visited an ear nose throat specialist who recommended going into her sinuses surgically to get things moving again. Kendall had never been anesthetized, however, and wasn’t eager to undergo major surgery. Then she learned of a relatively new outpatient technique available in Peru: Balloon sinuplasty, a procedure in which a balloon is inflated inside the sinuses to increase the size of the opening six-fold.

Food vs. Exercise
You’ve devoured the Thanksgiving turkey, along with stuffing, two kinds of potatoes, green rice, corn casserole, gravy, ham, pumpkin pie, baked beans, cranberries, rolls and whatever else is on the family’s tradition list. The football game is on and the board or card games have begun. So what’s the next choice to make? Take a walk or a nap on the couch?

It's all in a song
Mike Knutson taught himself to play the harmonica as a child, and the 96-year-old sang with his family for most of his life. Even now, as he suffers from dementia, music is an important part of his life thanks to a study looking at the impact of a nationwide music program aimed at helping dementia patients.

Is it right for your teen?
Teen girls who have sex should use IUDs or hormonal implants — long-acting birth control methods that are effective, safe and easy to use, the nation’s most influential pediatricians’ group recommends. In an updated policy, the American Academy of Pediatrics says condoms also should be used every time teens have sex, to provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases that other forms of birth control don’t provide, and to boost chances of preventing pregnancy.
