Are you chosing between vacation, a trendy pair of jeans or your life savings? Anybody? The answer is not many people will want to trade a tropical vacation (or any vacation, for that matter) for a new pair of hip-hugging blue jeans. Second-hand retail stores may be the solution for those frugal shoppers who want to wear the trends that are in style as well as save some money.

5 tips make teen trips more fun

Family travel falls into three distinct phases. First, there’s the exhausting period of travel with crying babies who need diapers, bottles, strollers, car seats and naps. Then come the golden years, when kids can handle long rides and long walks, when they actually think scavenger hunts are fun, and when they bask in their family’s love and attention. But that’s followed by the teenage years, which can be nearly as challenging as the toddler years — because to a teenager, any place a parent wants to go is by definition uncool.

Struggling in luxury
This is a town where people are so rich that a $2 million home can be a handyman’s special. A town where the thrift shop is stocked with donations of designer dresses and handbags. But Southampton, N.Y., with its privet hedges, pristine beaches and some estates costing 10s of millions, also is where 40 percent of children get free or reduced school lunches, where a food pantry serves up to 400 clients a month and where some doctors and nurses share homes owned by the local hospital because they can’t afford to buy or rent.

Finding meaning

Respecting or learning from one’s elders isn’t exactly a top priority for most teens. They’re too busy texting or mastering the latest social media platform to relate to the idea that their grandparents ever battled teenage issues like acne or fitting in. For Maya Van Wagenen, though, digging up a previous generation’s teen scene actually helped her. She survived the middle-school blues thanks to “Betty Cornell’s Teenage Popularity Guide,” published in 1953. Her experiences following the guide led Van Wagenen to write her own book, “Popular,” which has now been optioned for a movie.
